Acadia National Park

June 2008
Bar Harbor , ME
posted by Wade

Acadia is one of the most sought after National Parks for visiting. Prime time to visit is between June and August. The park sits on the upper northeast coast of Maine on Mt Desert Island.

We were only there for a few days so we did a few quick excursions. First we drove up to Cadillac mountain which is 1,530 feet, but only as short distance from the ocean. The view from the top was magnificent. You could see hundreds of rocky islands off the coast and in the harbor, fishing vessels, and in the distance to the north, Mt Kathadin (the northern terminus of the AT). Cadillac mountain is a cool place to explore. It is mostly bald and has quite a bit of rock outcroppings to play on.

We also did a 6 mile mountain bike ride around Eagle Lake. The path is mostly tiny gravel and is wide enough for clockwise and counterclockwise traffic. The lake is placid and beautiful and really... right off a postcard. The trail is easily doable by all skill levels, but there are some big hills.

We also sailed on a huge schooner out of Bar Harbor. It took us out and we saw harbor porpoises and seals.

You can take kayak lessons, rent bikes, buy lobster ice cream, sample the local microbrews, backpack, or day hike. I have to get back because 2 days wasn't enough.
