Asheville NC Biltmore

December 2007
Asheville , NC
posted by Wade

Well this wasn't much of an Outdoorzy trip. We would have liked to have gotten out and done some hiking while we were there, but it rained on us almost the whole time.

We did get to go see the Biltmore Mansion, which was amazing. It's a bit pricy, $45 per person, but you get to tour the biggest private home in America. Not to mention the winery tour and wine tasting they throw in.

We stayed at the Days Inn in downtown Asheville. Not to impressive. But, it was pet friendly, and KrissyDog enjoyed tagging along on this trip. They have free breakfast, so it's good for the dirtbag budgeteers out there. It is also within walking distance of all the downtown shops. There are tons of cool restaurants, pubs, art galleries, and shops. There is a nice hippy sub-culture, and there is a culinary school in town. So plenty to eat and lots to look at. I really enjoyed it and I'll be back for sure. We went to a cool Tapas restaurant, Zambras, and a pizza place called Barley's Taproom that had a great beer selection and good pies.

We eyed a few other places we'll hit next time. We may head to Pisgah and camp for a few days this summer, mountain bike, chill by the fire, and then hit downtown one night.

I travel to Asheville about 3 times a year and I enjoy the ride as much as the destination. Unfortunately it is usually a business trip and there is little free time to explore. We did make the Biltmore and winery on the last trip, it was pretty cool. Our meetings were held on the Biltmore property and I found myself day dreaming like it did back in school.

We did hit the winery up! It was good. I was a little surprised that their wine was that good.

I wish we could have gotten to do some hiking... oh well, next time!
