I'm headed down to hike a section of the AT in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in about a week. I'll be starting on Alum Cave Trail, hitting the Mt Leconte summit, down to the AT and then staying on it until I get to the Cades Cove area. (5-6 days total)I have a shuttle service reserved and I'm going to stay in the shelters along the way (already reserved). I'll get a backcountry pass once I'm there.

Anyone done this section?

Bear advice?

Elevation difficulties?

Other advice?

Muchas Gracias!!
Wade

sounds fun, going alone? Shouldn't have any elevation problems, but snow storms aren't that uncommon in April and May, hopefully you will have good weather.

You'll be getting a trip report for sure!

As far as snow, I'm hoping I don't have any issues with that. Right now the weather is looking good up there. As long as that pattern holds through next week I'll be good to go. I'm going to call the day before I leave and get conditions from the park services too.

Any other advice on that area is greatly appreciated!

By the way, this will also be my first solo trip over 3 days.

6 days on the trail by yourself will definitly be interesting. So I'm sure it has it's own struggles. Staying in the shelters though I'll have some social interaction each night, which should be good. I'm hoping for a good mix of interaction and solitude.

Ahah, looking to find out a little bout yourself. Well, the only time you will be by yourself will be from the time you set off each morning until you run into a boy scout troop about a mile later This might come as a shocker, but I have been told I am a loner sometimes, which is why I have never stayed in a shelter. You have no choice on the section you will be on, so hopefully you will find good company.
